The campaigning Obama was a fraud. Eloquent, yes, but still a fraud. Almost everything which he identified or promised has been either not true or not doable
Can he recover? Yes, BUT he has to get over his intellectual arrogance and listen to (heaven forbid) Washington insiders. He also must admit that he doesn't know how to run anything and must find and turn over that aspect of the Presidency to those most competent AND he has to move out a number of his Cabinet who are just like fish out of water in Washington.
Finally, he must convince the Party to get rid of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi because they are both bad image material for the upcoming 2010 Congressional elections.
