Dave Peterson, Bicycle liaison, Fermilab Traffic Safety Subcommittee, is distributing flyers which include A map. Dave is getting the word out about bicycle safety. Although roads at Fermilab are often lightly traveled, accidents between motorists and cyclist have occurred and Fermilab would like to make sure that visitors there have a safe and enjoyable ride.
As most cyclists in Warrenville are aware, Fermilab has many miles of trails and roads available for bicycling. They welcome riders of all ages; however children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
The information being distributed asks cyclists to help them keep Fermilab a safe place. It is important to know that Fermilab requires all visitors to follow the Illinois Rules of the Road. Cyclists are specifically asked to:
- Obey all Stop Signs
- Signal your turns
- Ride on the right side of the road
- Ride no more than two abreast
- Do not black passing traffic
It is not mentioned in the flyers that are being distributed, but I know that law enforcement within Fermilab strictly enforces these “Bicycle Rules of the Road”!
It is important to note that only certain roads on the Fermilab site are open to the public. Please check the map for public areas. This map is posted at each entrance to Fermilab.
The Fermilab site is open to cyclists from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cyclists may enter Fermilab at the Batavia Road entrance at the east side of the site or at Pine Street entrance at the sest side. Cyclists may ride on either the paved bicycle path OR ON THE ROAD. Restroom, drinking fountains and vending machines are available in the public areas of Wilson Hall.
