There are numerous bike bags: Handlebar Bags, Saddle Bags, Rack Top Bags, Seat Bags, etc. Every cyclist needs a bike bag and whether you are a “roadie”, a mountain biker, a commuter, or a recreational cyclists, having an under seat bag can be a very important accessory. Some of us like to pack enough to build a bike; some of us like to carry just enough to fix one flat. Here are some suggestions on what to pack for a ride whether you’re an Optimist or a Pessimist - and how to make some reductions if you are the latter.
The Optimist - Pack a spare tube, a CO2 cartridge and inflator, some tire levers, and a multi-purpose fold up tool. These mini-tools are equipped with necessary hex wrenches and screw drivers to allow making minor adjustments to most everything on your bike.
The Pessimist - No matter how concerned you are about flats, shoving more than one spare tube into your seat bag is hard to do. If you have that concern, pack all the things shown above for the minimum, and add a patch kit and an extra CO2 cartridge. Squeeze in a $5 bill for emergencies, and photocopies of your Drivers License and insurance card, in case of a crash. Some of us like to carry some first aid items just in case. Add a SRAM Powerlink to fix your chain long enough to get home. If you pretty much fill up your bag with this stuff, consider buying an expandable bag. Then if you need to shed your jacket or a layer of clothing, you’ll have a place to carry it.
It’s all about having fun, and using our bikes regularly. Having the right combination of accessories can add immensely to our fun.
