START YOUR BEST CYCLING YEAR NOW
Starting a new year gives us the opportunity for a fresh start, so anything that happened last year that kept you from riding like you wanted to happen last year. It’s time for a new start.
Take your bike to the bike shop for that much needed tune=up or overhaul. Just going to the bike shop is inspirational. While you are there browsing, why not buy a new jersey, a quality pair of cycling shorts, or a new helmet. Maybe all three! This will jump start your cycling enthusiasm.
Don’t get involved with a fast, fit group ride at the start. All you’ll see is the backs of other riders. Start out solo and at your own pace, or ride with a friend who is even slower than you are.
If last year you only thought about training, target heart rates, cadence, watts, etc., strip your body and your bike of all the measuring devises. Just go out and ride and enjoy.
If you can, try riding a different bike once a week, just for fun.
When you feel like you have a long way to go, fitness wise, don’t compare yourself with other cyclists. Just compare yourself with the average American. It will make you feel better.
Losing a little weight before the riding season begins can be helpful. Decrease your intake of fat. Take the weight off slowly. Experts advise about a half pound to a pound per week.
Always be sure to include the most important meal of the day – breakfast. Also, be sure to get a good snack after a ride of two hours or more.
Watch out on the weekends. Even if you are very regimented during the week, weekends sometimes get us out of the routine. A bowl of chips while watching the football game can reverse all of our good effort during the rest of the week.
