Summer is passing quickly and a number of opportunities are at hand. Some have short time fuses. Consider the following:
1. The BRAA will participate in the VT Gobblerfest on September 5 in Squires Student Center in the second floor hallway. This is an event designed to familiarize the Tech students with the array of cultural opportunities offered throughout the Tech Community and the Blacksburg Community. This event will be from 1-5pm on Friday September 5. Setup will be at 12:00noon. We will have about 12 easels for the display of 2D are and the Perspective Gallery has graciously offered the loan of pedestals for 3D works. I anticipate 5 + pedestals. This will be a fantastic opportunity to get exposure to and recruiting from the Tech Student Community. WE will have membership brochures there and members to discuss the works and/or the BRAA. The expected attendance is 10,000+ students
The goal of the exhibit is to show the breadth of artistic media that is used in artistic expression within the BRAA. Thus, we desire to have clay, wood, pastels, oils, computage, acrylics, watercolors, stained glass, fused glass, fiber arts, stone sculpture, welded sculpture, and cast sculptures to name a few. If I missed your media like I missed my knit wire work, please forgive! Submit your offering any way!
The BRAA Exhibition approved artists in good standing (having a job within the BRAA or having paid the exhibition fee) are invited to submit one artwork. This submission must have your name, contact information, media type, and a digital image (2 images for 3D works) sent to Larry Mitchell at drldmm@comcast.net. Submissions will only be rejected based upon a media category being full, first come first served, or the exhibit space is exhausted. No selection is necessary since you are all approved artists and variety is the theme
2. Next, Squires has been renovating conference rooms and the old art in those spaces is no longer appropriate. The theme of the art replacements is local artist. The BRAA has been asked to participate. Mary Tartaro, Director of the Perspective Gallery, will the sole judge of appropriate art works to be semi-permanently displayed in these room. Below is an excerpt from her request email.
“I wanted to contact the BRAA because we are wanting art to display in the bldg but don’t have much a budget to do so. We do however have the ability to make high quality prints in House. Please let me know if any of your members would be interested in having .Their work on display in Squires. We would just need a digital image from which we would pay for the printing and framing. The artist’s name would be on a plaque next to the piece and any website contact info could be include to help boost sales and market their work .My need is pretty immediate…”
In summary, the Perspective Gallery will take your digital image, print it one time only, mat, and frame it at their cost. It appears that photographic work is best suited for the opportunity, but quality photographs of paintings may work to make prints but you may not wants such prints in existence. The work will be displayed throughout Squires and will be come part of Squires Permanent collection. The artist gets the exposure, the labeling of the work with contact information, and the resume entry. We hope that the BRAA will have a place on the labeling, such as “In cooperation with the Blacksburg Regional Art Association.”
