The Christiansburg Town Council will meet in the Municipal Building at 7:30 pm tonight.  While many items remain on the "back burner" or seem to have simply disappeared, citizens can get an idea of town's priority list by what does appear on the agenda:

  • A CUP requested by Radford & Co. for property on Walters Drive for residential use zoned as B3 General Business (see parcel noted as "165" in map, below) is scheduled for a Joint Public Hearing.  (Note on Nov. 3, adjacent property owners from Slate Creek Commons voiced long-term complaints about a developer in this neighborhood.)  Council is expected to vote on the Planning Commission's  (PC) recommendation for this request at their Feb. 3 meeting.

  • During the Citizen Hearings, the PC will give a recommendation to council for a CUP requested by the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors for a parking garage to be located at the intersection of First and Pepper Streets.  Council is expected to take a vote to approve, disapprove or amend the PC's recommendation later during this meeting.
  • Citizens may also bring forward comments and concerns about any town subject at this time.
  • A status for a "feasibility study" for a pathway (walking/bicycle) on Cambria Street between the town's rec center and Sleepy Hollow Road will be discussed.  Shortly after coming onto council Sept. 1, newcomer and former PC member Jim VanHoozier stated he had been approached about providing this amenity by friends and neighbors.  As shown by the map below, this area has experienced large volumes of new residential development which, like most older areas of the town, have not been connected by a pathway system as proposed decades ago.

  • Council will then shift focus to discussing a plan outlining usage of funds withheld from the regional tourism initiative.  Councilman VanHoozier had asked for a plan when this topic last came up, and was told there wasn't one -- but the Mayor stated a list of past marketing efforts by the town would be provided.  It will be enlightening to see how $15-20 thousand is suggested to be spent by the town, benefiting citizens and local businesses by increasing revenues and offsetting other taxes.
  • The meeting will conclude, as usual, with the Town Manager providing a Progress Report.  What this includes is always unknown beforehand, but perhaps it will include updates on implementing moped regulations or downtown parking restrictions.

If nothing on this agenda interests you, there are several other public meetings which will also be held today.  Plenty of topics to choose from, whether an impending web launch, public education, county budget discussions or just sitting outside a closed meeting.  Hope to see you, neighbor.
