Entry 4 of 10

Why is it that the first time we do something is so memorable? I bet your parents can vividly recall the first time you opened your bright eyes for the world to see, or your first steps, even the first time you "spoke". The first time we engage in an activity we are marveled by our own ability. Those around us are also intrigued. Many fond memories are based around firsts.

The 2008 National FFA Convention was submerged me in an array of firsts. Not only was this my first year wearing a west virginia association jacket, this was my first year to attend a national convention. Even more amazing this was the first time I had ever been intertwined with more than 50,000 FFA members. WOW! My first session I had a floor seat, I was standing in a sea of blue jackets. The energy and enthusiasm overflowed the field house, it took my breath away.

I also met many of the state officers who will be traveling to China with me in January. I will be taking part in the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers (ILSSO). This trip will also offer its fair share of first; my first time on an airplane, the first time I will be on the other side of the Rockies, the first time I have ever traveled outside of WV without another west virginian, and my first time out of the country. Needless to say I am excited/anxious/nervous.

Although we might think we are the only ones affected by our first time experiences, we inspire those who are close to us. I neglected to call my family for most of my week at the National Convention. Time had flown by, and it did not seem I could fit them into my schedule. Then my sister sent me a text message, she rarely does this, all it asked was "When are you coming home?” I called home that evening, the excitement on the phone was comparable to that of the convention hall.

I hope the first time you do anything sticks in your memory. I hope look back on it and make future decision based on the initial outcome. Just remember you are never the only one that will be affected.
