Entry 5 of 10

Many counties in West Virginia were white today. Snow blew threw many towns, causing school delays and cancelations, not for Roane County. Last night we stayed up, planning and practicing our presentations. Our night wouldn't have been complete without a midnight Wal*Mart run.  Finally after much "debate" everything was penciled in. We were ready.

As we were getting ready to leave I gathered my things, making sure we had all we needed at the door ready to journey to Spencer.  It became time to leave and my keys were MIA.  Rather than spending more time looking, we decided to take Caleb's truck.  Leaving the driveway proved to be quite challenging.  After the truck revved its engine and did not move we knew there was a problem.  Caleb's phone rang, his dad told him his brake had to have been frozen, thus the back driver's side tire was not mobile.

This meant not only were we behind schedule, we had to unpack and repack.  This might not have been challenging for Caleb but I tend to over pack. Ten minutes later we were on the road.  Our morning had been terrible; I had no idea where my only set of keys were, Caleb's truck tire was messed up, we were running behind, most importantly, we were hungry!

We decided that this was not our morning.  All of the sudden the expedition jerked to the right, when it stopped we were looking forward. 360, we just turned 360 degrees, a complete circle.  To the left of the road was a fence, telephone pole and a meter, to the right a meadow.  We missed all the obstacles.  As we exchanged glances we were speechless.

The day that we spent hours planning did not go our way at all.  We had all of our materials ready, but we were  unable to complete our task.  It did not seem fair.  As we made our way back to Caleb's house we notified his family of our misfortune, then the Roane County advisors.

After all the excitement was over Caleb and I reflected.  If we would have been aware of the signs, or took advice from those who are older and wiser we wouldn't have ended up in our situation.  However, it was a learning experience.  Plans are great maps, but a map for Alaska has little purpose for Georgia.
